REC4BOX OB Factory Shakes Canadian Mobile TV Production Industry with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 Mixing Console

MONTREAL, Canada – Balancing the creative demands of production teams with the realities of tight budgets and production timelines, REC4BOX OB Factory specializes in manufacturing fully customized OB trucks. By designing and creating the first OB truck in its region that houses a HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 mixing console, REC4BOX was able to set new industry standards in terms of versatility, deployment speeds and broadcasting capabilities.

Currently, REC4BOX operates on a contract basis, renting out or selling fully operational OB trucks to networks in Canada and the US. Each system undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that networks are able to start production within an hour of receiving the trailer, with only two onboard technicians. The Vista 1 console is perfect for this application, as it contains all mobile broadcasting tools, eliminating the need for additional racks of gear.

“For sound and television applications, we instantly think of Soundcraft and Studer,” said Jonathan Fortin, engineer at REC4BOX. “For this truck, we needed analog inputs right behind the board, so we went with Studer. We tend to be early adopters of technology, opting for the best solution for our trucks considering the tight budget and schedule.”

The Vista 1 console comes standard with 32 mic/line inputs and 32 analog line outputs as well as broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control and eight GPIOs. For this particular truck, the REC4BOX team added a stage box with 64 additional inputs, and integrated the console with a complete 5.1 surround sound kit. The truck itself requires 12 analog inputs to operate, while 48 to 64 inputs are activated during a TV show.

Studer consoles provide an advanced, intuitive control surface making them easy to learn and fast to operate. The Vista 1 is unique in its powerful yet compact footprint. Thanks to the Vistonics™ user interface, the Vista 1 is as easy to use as any full size console, thereby decreasing deployment and setup time for mobile broadcasting units.

“The Vista 1 is perfect for our needs, so we ordered another one for the next truck that we’re building,” said Fortin. “It does everything we need and much more, and it has great integration with products from other brands. We love its user-friendly design, making workflow on the Vista 1 a lot easier than on the Yamaha consoles that we have tried. Overall, we are very happy and so are our customers.”

ITV Backs HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 as New Coronation Street Production Goes Digital

TRAFFORD, United Kingdom - The relocation of the famous ITV Coronation Street lot, from Manchester’s Quay Street Studios to the 7.7-acre studio and production facility on the Trafford side of MediaCityUK, has coincided with a significant streamlining of technology. Set in a fictional town in the north of England, what has become the world's longest-running television soap opera is a British ‘institution’, having first been broadcast back in December 1960. One of the biggest upgrades in this latest development has been the transition from an analogue mixing environment to a HARMAN Studer digital platform, once ITV had learnt that its familiar analogue surface would no longer be supported.

With AVC Electronics appointed project consultants and TSL tendering successfully for the installation contract, Coronation Street’s head of sound, Alan Monks and Coronation Street technical manager, Stan Robinson, researched the market for suitable options. But it was the show’s senior sound supervisor, Mark Cochran, who suggested investigating Studer Vista 1 all-in-one desk for each of its two new production galleries.

These were duly adopted, along with Compact Stageboxes and a Soundcraft Si Compact 16 mixing desk from Studer’s sister company Soundcraft, to provide resilience. When the order was placed by TSL, the Vista 1 became the first Studer sale to an ITV facility.

Earlier, a site visit had been arranged for the show’s leading technicians, along with AVC’s lead consultant Raz Khan, at Studer’s offices in Potters Bar. Khan recalls, “Initially we evaluated the Vista 5, and had one on demo, so we could evaluate the platform, knowing that the Vista 1 would shortly be in production. From that it was written into the specification.”

Stan Robinson added, “We realised the Vista 1 would offer more or less the same facilities and also that it was compatible with Optocore fibre distribution, which we were running right across the site, linking the five production control areas.”

The 22-fader Studer Vista 1, containing 20 channel strips and two grand master faders, provides Coronation Street with true broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control and eight general-purpose control inputs/outputs (GPIO).

But aside from ease of use and intuitive Vistonics™ interface, one of the key reasons for choosing Studer was the superior mic preamp — an observation made after the technical team had carried out comparison tests with their own alternatives.

Stan Robinson admits that the Studer D21m mic input card, transformer balanced to all five stageboxes, had been a key driver, with Studer stageboxes transporting native MADI over an Optocore system.

Noted RazKhan, “This solution meant that the whole rigging set up became a lot simpler, with fibre out to the OB van to transport MADI and a ruggedized case housing the electronics. With DSP onboard, this fitted the bill perfectly for the budget and operational flexibility and redundancy.”

He added, “We didn't like the multi-layered menu of other desks — this was a lot easier. Also it needed to be intuitive because we have a small core of technical staff and a lot of freelance engineers using the system. It has been extremely well received.” Once a mic is plugged into appropriate input the source immediately appears on the relevant fader in the sound control room.

Speaking of the desk’s attributes, Mark Cochran stated, “You can access everything at the press of a button and EQ all your channel strips — and because the Studer stage box has option cards we were able to buy the highest quality mic amps.”

This digital format has allowed Stan Robinson to introduce a unique fibre transportation system for the signals around the site. Based on the Optocore network structure, the portable stageboxes allow signals from the studios (or anywhere else on the site) to be routed to either gallery.

Each gallery has its own stagebox, which production simply wheels to where shooting is taking place, and plugs in to the SMPTE 311M hybrid camera cable network — with 100 SMPTE sockets distributed around the site that can be patched in. Signals such as microphones, foldback, picture monitoring, video router control and talkback are automatically routed to the Studio Floor and Galleries. “In effect, the whole site becomes our studio floor,” says Stan Robinson.

Summing up he backs Mark Cochran’s endorsement of the Vista 1. “We have all been extremely happy with the decision to back the Studer platform, and it has been extremely well received.”

Mizmor HD Productions Turns to HARMAN’s Studer

TEL AVIV, Israel – Mizmor HD Productions, based in Tel Aviv, has recently purchased a 32-fader HARMAN Studer Vista 1 digital console through Kilim Electronics, Studer’s Israeli distributor.

Under the direction of Daniel Lankry, Mizmor HD has grown steadily since being founded in 1992 and today has four sophisticated HD OB vans, including the largest in Israel, broadcasting mainly sport and national events. It is in this OB, which can accommodate up to 14 cameras, that the Vista 1 and Compact Stagebox have been installed, replacing the previous analogue console.

After considering all options, the purchasing decision was based on the superior facilities of the Studer console and the service/backup Mizmor knew it would receive from Kilim Electronics.

The Vista 1 is a transportable all-in-one digital mixing console for broadcast, live and production use, with the control surface, I/O system, DSP and power supplies all contained within the console. This makes it the ideal choice when space is restricted, such as in OB and ENG vans.

Thanks to the patented Vistonics™ user interface, with 40 on-screen rotary knobs, the Vista 1’s look and feel is identical to that of the larger, more sophisticated Vistas.

The OB van’s technicians say their excitement on taking delivery was eclipsed by the speed of installation (which they undertook themselves). They then discovered just how easy the Vista 1 was to operate.

“In fact they started working only a quarter of an hour after the installation was complete—without the need to study the manual,” reported Kilim Electronics’ MD Meir Kilim, whose Haifa-based company again supplied all the services.

Brian Pannier Goes Wild for HARMAN Studer Vista 1 Digital Audio Console

NEW YORK, New York — For more than 30 years, veteran audio engineer Brian Pannier has mixed sound for countless television programs including sports broadcasts, talk shows, soap operas and more. Most recently, Pannier has been mixing the audio for “Crowd Goes Wild” on FOX Sports 1, where he is using a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 digital audio console.

“Crowd Goes Wild” is a live sports entertainment talk show hosted by Regis Philbin with panelists Georgie Thompson, Michael Kosta, Trevor Pryce, Jason Gay and Katie Nolan, where the group discusses the biggest stories in sports, entertainment and more. “We have six to eight people talking at one time and it’s filmed with a live studio audience, so it’s a fast-paced and very lively show,” Pannier said.

“Crowd Goes Wild” began airing in mid-August and is filmed at a film stage at Pier 60 in New York City. With so many live microphones during tapings, Pannier is tasked with handling a multitude of audio sources. “The audio console needs to be able to accommodate that variety, which the Vista 1 does quite well,” Pannier said. “It’s a small desk but is being used to its complete and full capacity, and it’s performing great.”

While this project marks Pannier’s first experience with a Studer digital audio console, he found the learning curve with the Vista 1 to be minimal, thanks to intuitive features including the Vistonics™ interface and FaderGlow™. “The Vista 1 has proven to be very user-friendly, intuitively laid out and much easier to operate than a lot of digital consoles out there,” he said. “Just as importantly, the sound quality is top-notch.”

In addition, Studer’s commitment to customer service has paid off in spades. “The relationship I’ve developed with Studer has been great,” Pannier noted. “They’ve been able to give me quick feedback and that’s way above and beyond what I expect as a rental customer.”

Last but not least, the portability of the Vista 1 enables Pannier to transport and configure the console in any space imaginable. “Being able to pick up and move the Vista 1 is incredible and the entire console including the power supply is self-contained,” he said. “I consider this console to be a breakthrough.”

TV Skyline Travels with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1

MAINZ, Germany – Mainz-based TV Skyline GmbH is one of the largest OB trucks and service providers in Germany, serving public and private TV channels as well as customers in various industries throughout Europe. To meet the increasing customer demand for surround sound productions, TV Skyline upgraded the audio technology of its Ü3HD truck with a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 console. The Vista 1 was sold through Audio Pro, Studer’s German distributor.

The Vista 1 in Ü3HD is equipped with 32 faders and offers 32 mic / line inputs, 32 analog outputs and eight AES / EBU stereo input and output channels, as well as an integrated MADI port. A Riedel RockNet card is installed in the expansion slot of the console, ensuring the integration of the MediorNet system.

One particular advantage to the Vista 1 is that no external hardware is required, according to Jan Saueressig of TV Skyline. “The compact dimensions of the mixer, combined with the fact that no external hardware is needed, was a huge advantage of the Vista 1,” he said. “The easy access to MediorNet was another advantage that made the Vista 1 the obvious choice.”

“The time we had to incorporate the new console into our service was extremely short, but we familiarized ourselves with it very quickly,” Saueressig added. “We already knew about the Vistonics™ interface from using the Soundcraft Vi1, which was in our Ü1HD truck. The Vista 1 has additional options, such as surround sound and configurable DSP allocation.”

The console was first used in an 8-camera production at the start of the season for the Austrian Bundesliga soccer tournament in Innsbruck. The game was produced for the ORF and broadcasted by TV Skyline on behalf of Media Plaza in 5.1 Surround. Other productions followed at the Salzburg Festival for the transmission of the 8th Symphony of Mahler, and at the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. Which were also produced in 5.1 Surround.
