Rockdale Town Hall Upgrades to State-of-the-Art Audio System with HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers and Soundcraft Digital Console

SYDNEY, Australia – In a project designed to reinvigorate the city’s regional arts and cultural hub, systems integration firm The P.A. People recently upgraded the audio system at Sydney’s Rockdale Town Hall. The new state-of-the-art system features HARMAN’s JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers and a Soundcraft Si Expression 1 digital console.

The new audio components at Rockdale Town Hall provide fresh life to the historic complex and provided Sydney with a world-class venue that can accommodate a varied array of events from musical concerts and variety shows to business, community and social events. In addition to the new PA and communications system, the auditorium’s beautiful Art Deco detailing has been restored.

To avoid intruding on the classical aesthetics of the venue, an unobtrusive yet powerful PA system was required and Brett Steele, project manager for The P.A. People, immediately thought of the JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers. Hung in a left/center/right configuration, the VRX932LA loudspeakers deliver extraordinary power handling, clarity, flexibility and, of course, stunning JBL sound in an attractive, easy to handle and affordable package.

“The VRX loudspeakers are configured to ensure maximum coverage and cater to the widest range of applications from musical theater to simple speeches,” Steele said. “The VRX rigging made it easy to install and the system is performing well.”

The PA is controlled through a Soundcraft Si Expression 1 digital mixing console, which is ideal for a venue that has to accommodate a wide variety of uses.

“This easy-to-use console from Soundcraft has the flexibility to accept local inputs in the control area, such as radio microphones and playback sources, as well as accepting microphone and line level inputs via the mini stage box located on the stage,” Steele added. “This is a great general purpose console for this venue.”

The reopening concert received a warm reception from both the crowd and in particular, the council.

“The Rockdale Town Hall reopening concert proved the sound system, specifically designed for this unique 1940s Art Deco auditorium, has the dynamic range to cater for any type of performance from opera to basic public speaking” endorsed a Council spokesman. “It complements and supplements the existing natural excellent acoustics of the Hall. Rockdale City Council is very happy with the end result.”

Strictly Audio STL Counts on HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression Consoles For Regional Festivals

ST. LOUIS, Missouri – Running a small production company in the heart of Missouri, the owner of Strictly Audio STL Bob Walther provides his services to cover local festivals from St. Louis all the way to southern Illinois. While his HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 console is temporarily installed alongside the integrated HARMAN audio system at the Atomic Cowboy nightclub, his newly purchased Si Expression 2 is responsible for mixing the sound at some of his region’s most popular festivals.

The owners of the nightclub, which has a capacity of 700 people, were sold on the fact that the Si Expression’s core functions can be remotely controlled via the Soundcraft ViSi Remote 2.0 iPad app. This added functionality allows the 32-channel Si Expression 3 console to be stored away behind a barricaded space, freeing up precious room for customers, while the operator roams free through the crowd.

Besides the console, the audio system at the Atomic Cowboy features one JBL STX825 loudspeaker on each side of the stage and two SRX728S subwoofers under the stage, powered by two Crown I-Tech 6000 amplifiers, as well as three JBL SRX712M monitors powered by two Crown XTI2002 amplifiers. The sound is further enhanced by a dbx DriveRack, which provides optimum control of equalization and loudspeaker management.

“The evening after the installation was completed, a show took place that exceeded the expectations of the club owners and myself,” said Walther. “I knew that going with a full HARMAN setup would eliminate guesswork and result in good synergy, but we couldn’t believe how good the system sounded right out of the box. The owners praised the equipment that was chosen for the club, as the clarity and detail were fantastic. The Crown amplifiers provided plenty of headroom at front of house and the monitors made the band very happy.”

“I was pleased with the performance and audio fidelity of the Si Expression 3, which were my main reasons for purchasing a Si Expression 2,” Walther added. “The Si Expression Series remains far better than anything else within this price range. The lower channel count of the Si Expression 2 is more than sufficient for most of our local festivals and events, whereas the Si Expression 3 is used for regional touring groups, when not in use at the Atomic Cowboy.”

Having cut his teeth on analog equipment, Walther is averse to the cluttered menus found on some of the digital consoles in today’s market. However, the Soundcraft Si Expression consoles are designed with an appreciation for common sense; features such as FaderGlow™, the illuminated and color-coded fader-strip, speed up workflow and improve efficiency of operation.

“This console translates so well from the analog world, because it is designed in a very logical fashion,” Walther stated. “With some digital mixers out there, I almost feel like I’m translating a foreign language when attempting a live mix. With the Si Expression, I don’t even have to look at my hands, thanks to FaderGlow and the intuitive layout. Also, the onboard effects and compressors eliminated the need for a 4-foot-tall effects rack, which saved me a lot of room in the truck.”

Walther has recently used the Si Expression 2 in events such as the annual Crawfish Boil in downtown, where Cajun food is accompanied by a healthy dose of local musical acts. The Si Expression 3 temporarily installed in the nightclub will enjoy more spectacles such as the upcoming Mound City Music Fest over the weekend.

Conviction to HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Since the introduction of HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression Series, houses of worship have enjoyed the consoles’ ease of use and unmatched sound quality. Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Conviction, which delivers Christianity to convicted inmates, recently upgraded its audio inventory with an Si Expression 1 digital console.

When Eddie Baird, owner of Conviction, used the Si Expression for the first time, he was amazed at the quality of the sound from the console. As a musician with decades of experience in sound equipment, Baird toured more than 500 prisons in the US over the past year, and recognized the difference between a console from Soundcraft and those from other brands immediately when he fired up the Si Expression for the first time.

“It is simply amazing,” Baird said. “The different sounds that can be mixed in this board are incredible. I also love the Lexicon effects, which are the perfect additions for our needs right now. I feel like I can do so much with just the Si Expression.”

To complement the channel and bus processing, all Si Expression consoles integrate four stereo Lexicon FX processors based on the MX400, boasting 29 presets each, user-adjustable parameters and dedicated tap-tempo keys.

For the touring artist, the Si Expression 1 also offers a compact form factor with fast setup times. With the built-in Cue system, the 24 recallable mic pre amps can be saved for convenience.

“Setup times are incredibly fast,” Baird noted. “We arrive at detention centers and are ready to go immediately, which is fortunate due to the limited time constraints they give us. The transition from analog to this digital console was smoother than expected, because it feels just like an analog board, but with the added digital features. I absolutely love the experience, and look forward to recording with it.”

Hob Sound Adds HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression To Its One-Man Show

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts – Rob Bernstein, the sole owner of Hob Sound, recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 to accommodate his production and mixing needs. As a one-man business that provides sound equipment for a wide range of events, Bernstein requires an equally versatile console to match his needs.

The Soundcraft Si Expression console is the complete solution for all of Bernstein’s mixing requirements. Versatility is an understatement when it comes to this digital board with recallable features and analog-type controls. In addition, the Si Expression Series comes with GEQ effects on every bus as well as built-in Lexicon effects.

Within 15 minutes of working with the Si Expression, Bernstein was amazed at the quality of the console. “Its versatility blows anything else out of the water,” he said. “Having the graphic EQ’s available to all the buses is a huge advantage, and combined with the availability of compressors on each channel, this console replaces a lot of gear. This is critical to my operation, since I cannot haul all those additional racks by myself.”

The Soundcraft Si Expression comes with tons of features that make it easy to use and convenient to set up, which is highly appealing to sound engineers managing multiple events. ‘1 Control = 1 Function’ ensures that there is never any layering of controls. The One Touch Easy Mix (TOTEM) allows a single key to mix to an AUX, FX or Matrix bus. The Si Expression also features FaderGlow™ color-coded illuminated faders and a range of connectivity and network cards. It combines the utility of a digital console with the simplicity of an analog one.

“I love how much faster it is to set up for an event, due to the recallable features,” Bernstein added. “Even though this is my first digital board, it retains the simple feel and authentic sound of an analog board that I have grown accustomed to in my decades of experience. Also, I no longer have to worry about choosing which channel gets compressed or gated.”

Hob Sound recently mixed a show with the local band The Fools in the Boston area. “The Si Expression sounded great, and it is everything that I need from a console,” according to Bernstein.

The Si Expression 2 console was purchased through Pro Audio Star (www.proaudiostar.com).

The Blackbird Academy Flies High with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Digital Consoles

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Studio and live sound engineer John McBride and his wife, country artist Martina McBride are the owners of Blackbird Studio in Nashville, which since its founding in 2002 has grown to be a major facility for artists like The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Kid Rock, Tim McGraw and many others. In running the studio, John McBride came to realize that most of the younger people seeking internships or employment had little or no hands-on knowledge—even those who were graduates of college-level audio programs. As a result, John and Martina are opening The Blackbird Academy Studio Engineering Program on September 30, and beginning January 2014 the Academy will launch its Live Sound Engineering Program, which will incorporate HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression and Si Performer mixing consoles connected via MADI to the Soundcraft Compact Stagebox into their curriculum.

“There’s a serious need to provide practical experience to people who want to build careers in this industry,” said John McBride. “Our emphasis will be on hands-on learning, in a professional environment.”

Because The Blackbird Academy is located in Nashville, the community is enthusiastically supporting the school. “We make hit records here and the students will benefit from learning not only in our classrooms and studios but also from the artists, producers and engineers that make Nashville one of the country’s great musical centers,” McBride said.

“There are a million ways to record and mix audio and I don’t want students learning from just one person,” McBride continued. “I want them learning from several people who have been successful in the industry and we’re going to focus on giving them as much time with the gear as possible.”

Tony Cottrill will be the Director of the Live Sound Engineering Program at The Blackbird Academy. Cottrill is the front of house (FOH) engineer for Exile, Ronnie Milsap and Juice Newton and uses Soundcraft Si Performer and Si Expression live sound consoles. “The Soundcraft consoles are so powerful that we can have them up and running for a professional live show in 15 minutes,” Cottrill said. “So we decided I need to teach with these consoles, because if you’re out touring with a band and you want a self-contained system with front of house and monitor consoles, a digital stagebox, cable runs and Cat5 lines, the Soundcraft consoles can do that.”

Within the Live Sound Engineering Program, Cottrill will teach students how to integrate the Soundcraft front of house and monitor consoles with the Soundcraft Compact Stagebo. Next, students will learn how to mix FOH and monitors on both consoles. “We’ll bring the consoles in and learn theory on different types of processing, using crossovers, gain structure and other essential points,” Cottrill said.

Soundcraft’s Si Performer and Si Expression consoles will also be used in the school’s main live sound area, where a full sound reinforcement system will be set up to teach students how to mix live FOH and monitor sound and learn system networking. In addition to spending time behind the mixing boards, students will learn to work with the Soundcraft ViSi app, which enables remote control of Soundcraft consoles from an iPad.

The Live Sound Engineering Program will also feature a maintenance lab with soldering stations and Cottrill and his staff will teach everything from wiring XLR and RG59 connectors to building crossovers and bench-testing components with test instruments. In addition, the course work will cover acoustics, sound system installation and other areas.

“In reality, you’re going to come across every conceivable situation, from a best-case scenario like a perfectly equipped studio to a gig where the studio hasn’t been maintained or a gig where half the PA doesn’t work,” McBride said. “At The Blackbird Academy, you’re going to learn how to get good sound under any circumstances.”

“The first thing you’re going to hear at The Blackbird Academy is that attitude is 99 percent of the gig,” McBride concluded. “We’re looking for passionate, creative, professional people.”

Musician, Engineer and Pilot Joe Ellis Soars to Greater Sonic Heights With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 3 Digital Mixing Console

MOSINEE, Wisconsin – Musician Joe Ellis’ career is flying higher than ever these days—literally and figuratively, as Ellis is a professional commercial airline pilot and a professional musician and audio engineer. When he’s not flying, Ellis appears as a host on the TV show “The Aviators,” performs with his band under the moniker “Joe.e” and uses a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 console to mix live sound for a growing number of bands and events.

Like so many musicians, Ellis came to the point where he realized he needed to make the transition from analog to digital mixing. The artists and bands he worked with wanted it, and more and more he found that he personally wanted a digital console for advantages like increased flexibility, built-in reverb and effects and other benefits. Recently, Ellis found another reason to take his sound system to a higher level.

“Every summer the city of Wausau, Wisconsin does a series of weekly outdoor concerts called ‘Concerts on the Square,’” Ellis noted. “I was fortunate enough to be chosen as the front of house mixer for the series. However, that meant I had to buy an entirely new sound system. I’d been used to doing small to mid-sized clubs.”

Ellis realized this challenge offered the perfect opportunity to move up to a digital console. After looking at what various companies had to offer, Ellis chose a Soundcraft Si Expression 3. He had worked on Soundcraft Si Compact models before and liked their audio quality and ease of mixing and thought the Si Expression 3 would be a logical upgrade.

“What sold me on the Soundcraft Si Expression 3 was the sound quality,” said Ellis. “I was used to using very high-quality analog consoles and was not willing to compromise on audio performance. The sound I can get from the Si Expression 3 is as good--if not better--than anything I’ve used before, and its functionality and ability to do everything I need are perfect for me.” In addition to the “Concerts on the Square” shows, Ellis uses the Si Expression 3 for everything from club dates with his band to mixing local rock bands to mixing a 9-piece wedding band.

Summer is the busiest time of the year for Ellis, and now that he’s using the Soundcraft Si Expression 3, it’s getting even busier, and not just from his front of house role for “Concerts on the Square.” Ellis works with a production company that subs work out to him and now that he has an Si Expression 3, he’s getting more business from the company. “They appreciate the fact that I have a console that they know will sound great in any situation, and that plays well with their other gear,” Ellis concluded.

Joe Ellis’ career can be followed at www.joeellismusic.com.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Expression 3 Console and CL1 Productions Show Their Talents At 2013 Miss Nebraska Pageant

Miss America 2011 and Miss Nebraska 2010 winner
Teresa Scanlan with the Soundcraft Si Expression 3.
LEXINGTON, Nebraska — Clyde Reimers, Owner of Lexington, Nebraska live sound contractor CL1 Productions, is a veteran audio professional who’s seen it all, going back to the 1960s. Through the years, Reimers has embraced improved technology that makes his life easier, like the HARMAN Soundcraft® Si Expression 3 digital live sound console he recently purchased and used for the Miss Nebraska 2013 pageant.

For the pageant, Reimers used the 32-channel Si Expression 3 to play back more than 50 audio tracks and 30 tracks with audio and video. “Each contestant either performed live or provided their own track for accompaniment, and each track needed different EQ, compression, level matching and other tweaking,” he noted. Previously, Reimers would have to spend a lot of time before the pageant remixing and re-recording the tracks to get them sonically consistent--or even more daunting, make adjustments on the fly at the time of the show.

He took an entirely different approach using the Si Expression 3. “In the two weeks of rehearsals I made the adjustments to each track on the Si Expression 3 and saved each one as a separate scene that I could instantly recall during the show.” Reimers assigned each contestant a number and found that what was previously very stressful and time-consuming became as easy as pushing a button once to go from one track to the next during the course of the 3-hour show. Reimers did the same thing for the live performances, accommodating everything from 16 channels of wireless and an onstage grand piano to in-ear and wedge monitor mixes. “Previously I’d have to have a very big cheat sheet,” he noted.

Coming from a live theater sound background, Reimers finds the versatility of the Si Expression 3 to be so useful in this regard and in other aspects that he says he’ll “never look at an analog desk again.” In addition to the Miss Nebraska 2013 event, CL1 Productions has used the console for theater productions like “Nunsense,” air shows, corporate functions, music festivals and other events and in every case he’s been impressed by the Si Expression 3’s ultra-clean sound quality, lack of noise and immunity to ground loops.

“With many consoles you’ll hear that ‘pop’ when you turn the console on and off while the amps are still on. I’d have to ask the other crew members if it was OK to turn the console on or off.” At one festival notorious for its “horrible” AC power, Reimers always had to struggle with noise coming through the analog console. “Now, the Si Expression 3 is so quiet I can’t even tell if the PA system is on or not.”

At first Reimers thought the console looked almost stripped down but came to appreciate its logical—and extremely powerful—configurability. He’s used it on shows where the Si Expression 3 provided a main mix and six monitor mixes and still had six subgroups left. In another situation he found he could configure the console where three subgroups rather than eight provided all the mixing flexibility he needed. “You have to re-think the way you normally mix audio,” he notes. “The Si Expression 3 feels more like a VCA console where you can assign anything to do anything you want.” The ability to globally look at functions like panning, EQ, and other aspects is invaluable when he needs to troubleshoot, instead of having to cue every channel to see if one is misbehaving.

Although all the automation and functionality is extremely useful, Reimers notes that the Si Expression 3 is equally adept when he has to mix manually. During one production of “Nunsense,” he neglected to save any settings, and realized it while people were entering the theater. He was able to do the show “blind” with no problem, finding the console’s FaderGlow illuminated fader feature particularly useful in the darkened theater environment.

In fact, CL1 Productions is planning on purchasing another Si Expression 3. “When you go to the CL1 Productions website in the near future you’re probably going to see an ad that says, ‘Much analog equipment for sale—cheap!’”
