HARMAN’s Martin Professional Establishes a New Standard for Moscow Nightlife in Space Club

MOSCOW, Russia — The nightlife culture changed dramatically in the Russian capital of Moscow with the grandiose opening of Space Moscow, a huge entertainment venue and nightclub designed to match the style of the original Space Club in Ibiza, Spain. To create a mesmerizing experience, Vitally Perepelin, Lighting Designer for Space Moscow, deployed over 70 of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures, fog machines, and lighting consoles.

The Space Ibiza club is a long-time active user of Martin lighting solutions, so when the franchise was brought to Moscow it was natural to continue using Martin equipment. Perepelin’s design features 22 MAC Aura LED wash lights, 12 MAC Viper Profiles, 12 compact MAC 101 fixtures, 16 RUSH MH3 Beams, 12 Atomic 3000 DMX strobes, M6 controller, ZR-44 Hi-Mass fog machine and the Jem 365 Ready hazer.

“I personally insisted on using Martin equipment,” said Perepelin. “I worked with Martin fixtures at the Euroshow company and I know very well the high quality of the products. The fixtures are very simple to use and they have a user-friendly menu. Moreover, some of them are really unique lights that don’t have any equals on the market. For example, the MAC Viper Profile is very fast for its size, bright, has a great set of gobos and is an excellent beam and animation. In my mind, Martin offers an optimal price-quality ratio which was a deciding factor for our installation.”

“Knowing that they also used Martin fixtures at Space in Spain, it was one more reason for me to pick the fixtures,” said Perepelin. “I think that our greatest achievement is that we can meet the riders of such popular world stars performing at our club such as Tiësto, who was the opening act in 2013, Steve Aoki, Above & Beyond, Cosmic Gate and others. The Lighting Designer for Tiësto was very appreciative of our installation and equipment, which is proof of our success.”

Space is far from just a nightclub and a big entertainment venue as it also functions as an events hall for corporate events. For this reason, it was important that the lighting installation be mobile to meet the different requirements of various events.

“From time to time I change the position of the Martin fixtures in the lighting set to add some diversity,” said Perepelin. “Of course, the changes are not so crucial but it’s still nice to have the flexibility to do so according to the customers’ wishes.”

“I still like to use my favorite compact moving head, the MAC 101,” said Perepelin. “Even though it’s been four years since its launch, it is a vital asset in many of my installations. It’s really fast and has a very bright beam! When the time comes for the most energetic part of the show, the MAC 101s and RUSH MH3 Beams march into battle. The high speed in combination with the brightness is truly amazing.”

Perepelin was very happy with Martin’s decision to provide an entry-level fixture with the launch of the RUSH series. “I think the RUSH MH3 Beam is a very worthy fixture for its functions and features,” he said. “It is perfect from the point of price and quality, which is a crucial factor in the club sphere. It’s not easy to find an affordable fixture with a good light output but the RUSH MH3 Beam has everything you need. It’s dynamic, has rich colors, a great prism and awesome gobos. It’s the perfect fixture!”

Perepelin explained that the basis for all lighting installations is centered around the flagship M6 lighting console and mentioned that he chose for several reasons. “As we use a set of Martin equipment, in my opinion we should use an original console. The M6 has all necessary functions for this club. Also, it is really easy to use and very powerful. It has perfect touchscreens that I like a lot and the programming is very easy too. It’s intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to jump between pages and arrange everything. I put one kind of parameters on one page and all the others on another which makes it easy to switch back and forth. This function makes this console so handy for me!”

DPS Inc. Provides HARMAN’s Martin Lighting and Controllers for Jesus Culture’s Live Album and DVD Recording

SACRAMENTO, California — Jesus Culture, which began as a youth group at a church in northern California, has become a global movement that includes conferences, events, campus ministries, and worship curriculums dedicated to demonstrating the love and power of God. To commemorate its recent relocation from Redding, California, where it was based for 18 years, to Sacramento, the Jesus Culture band recorded ‘Unstoppable Love’, a live album and DVD, at Sacramento’s prestigious Memorial Auditorium. With the help of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting console and fixtures, Lighting Designer Robby Kurtz was able to both successfully represent the Jesus Culture movement and showcase the importance of its relocation. California-based rental house DPS Inc., provided the lighting production equipment.

Kurtz deployed 32 of Martin’s MAC Viper Profile moving head luminaires and 26 Martin Atomic 3000 Strobe fixtures, to create a complicated design that ensured each song had its own look and, at the same time, kept the audience’s attention from being drawn to just one visual element.

The design featured 14 MAC Vipers hung from trusses above the stage with six on the stage deck and 12 additional Vipers around the audience to give the cameras aerial effects and to backlight the crowd. “The MAC Vipers were the main profiles for visual effects on the back wall and in the air,” said Kurtz. “I used gobos with a super-wide zoom setting and the light was able to cut through the other visual elements on the stage. Also, the Viper optics and speed are two of the main reasons I chose them for this event. The Zoom and Focus whips around at close to Iris speeds, which is awesome!”

Martin’s Atomic Strobe lights were also used throughout the production with additional fixtures hanging on DPS Inc.’s custom-built pipe hexagons that are suspended over the stage. “The Atomics are always a great way to help build audience energy during songs,” said Kurtz.

Kurtz also used Martin’s M6 lighting console to control the entire design. “I’ve been using the M-Series console platform since 2004 so having the M6 for this event was a perfect fit,” Kurtz said. “DPS provided 330 intelligent fixtures that spread over 25 universes and the M6 really helped me to spread out and have enough power to drive all the fixtures. The console worked like a champ and was extremely stable. With all the assignable encoders, it makes for a really fun desk that is very quick to program.”

As an avid user of Martin’s ShowDesigner software since MSD 4 Gold, Kurtz now owns the recently introduced MSD 6. “The Show Designer software is a great tool for programming offline,” said Kurtz. “I spent a couple of days building the foundation of the show at home, which saved a ton of time on-site.”

Kurtz said that the powerful combination of Martin and DPS Inc. was a critical part of capturing the essence of Jesus Culture. “The Jesus Culture band and ministry was very happy with how the event turned out and with what they have seen of the video,” he said. “The combination of Martin and DPS Inc.’s expertise resulted in an event that really represented Jesus Culture well and was true to the movement. Martin never disappoints with its new products and innovations. The quality and dependability of Martin products prove that they’ve been designed and tested for the biggest shows in the world.”

The Pixies Tour the World with HARMAN’s Martin Professional Lighting

BOSTON, Massachusetts — Legendary alternative rock band The Pixies have made quite the comeback after their revival 10 years ago, and are now on a worldwide tour with a full lighting rig from HARMAN’s Martin Professional.

Full service lighting, sound and rigging rental company based in New York, See Factor, worked with Myles Mangino, Lighting Designer for The Pixies, to create a rig featuring 15 MAC Viper Profiles, 12 MAC Auras, four RUSH MH3s and three Jem K1 Hazers.

The Pixies, who recently stopped at the renowned Coachella Music Festival after their reunion tour began nearly 10 years ago, needed a versatile lighting solution designed for different venues, stages and festivals.

“The real challenge was to have a show that could be as closely as possible duplicated in markets across the world,” stated Mangino. “Having a kit that was small enough to fit in a container, and also using fixtures that could be sourced in different markets was paramount.”

The upstage truss has 8-foot tail down bars for the MAC Vipers that went over the back screen. “The second we saw the Viper fixture we were impressed with its capabilities,” said Alban Sardzinski, See Factor. “It’s a compact light with a large zoom and high output which really helps Myles due to the fact that he can position it super close while still be effective. The first time we tried it at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and we only had a few feet behind his screen but it worked perfectly!”

“The Viper is currently my favorite fixture,” said Mangino. “The optics are wonderful and the speed of the zoom is unmatched. For a show like the Pixies, I run everything live, off temp faders. There are no cues or chases running so the responsiveness is critical for me. The Martin fixtures pan, tilt and the wheels seem to respond to manual movements with faders better than anything else I’ve tried.”

At first, Mangino was skeptical of the RUSH MH3s, but after just one show they were part of the rig. “I love the colors! They all match and we more or less use them as the bands key light by reflecting them off the mirrored domes above the stage.”

“The Auras, in my opinion, are the most essential element,” mentioned Sardzinski. “I knew Mangino had used them prior to the Pixies and they would fit in perfectly with the rest of the rig. I love the look of the beam and the colors they create. They are perfect for the backlight effect we were going for.”

“When the tour first launched we weren’t using Martin hazers,” Sardzinksi continued, “but they were so loud and obnoxious that we swapped them out for the K1s and we couldn’t be happier.”

“We’re proud to work with Mangino and with Martin,” said Sardzinski. “We’ve always found Martin to have very durable fixtures and whenever we have them out there we know we’ll have a perfect show, every time!”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Fixtures Shine For Saddleback Church’s Powerful, Music-Inspired Services and Global Broadcasts

LAKE FOREST, California — With a flourishing network of worship facilities across southern California, internationally and via webcasts, the Saddleback Church, with a congregation of tens of thousand around the world, has grown accustom to the bold sermons from Pastor Rick Warren in an exciting atmosphere. Highlighted by a wide variety of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures, the church has developed a type of service that’s evolved from a single preacher on a stage to an all-encompassing music and light show experience. Flashing lights, passion-filled songs and roaring applause breaks are the norm for Saddleback.

Saddleback’s main worship center, out of the six in the Lake Forest, CA campus, boasts six MAC Viper Profiles and 18 Auras along the stage. The main worship center seats 3,000 members per service, averaging more than 17,000 worshipers per weekend. The additional worship areas on the Lake Forest campus range from 50-600 capacity limits, offering different takes on the Church’s sermon for the day, whether a more traditional service, hard rock, or other genre, to keep parishioners entertained and engaged. Each of the remote campuses features a wide variety of Martin fixtures as well.

In-house lighting designer Alex Fuller has played a large part in the implementation of Martin lighting fixtures into Saddleback Church. “We’re here to provide an experience for the community, not just a stage for your average worship service,” stated Fuller. “The Vipers perform perfectly once they’re up in our venues, and the Auras are workhorses that we can rely on week after week, without worry.”

A routine day of service in the main worship venue transitions between the band performing five to six songs, regular and guest speakers and videos playing. Two 24x13-foot screens flank the stage for an enhanced visual experience.

Recently, Saddleback has added satellite campuses in Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, and Berlin. In addition to creating delightful, custom light shows for each sermon and concert, the church broadcasts each service live to its congregation around the world. “Our worship center has become more of a broadcast room, with thousands of people both participating live and watching abroad,” says Greg Baker, Global Technical Director, Saddleback Church. “Lighting is a huge part of broadcast and the Martin fixtures allow us to provide top-notch quality over our high-definition broadcast channel every day. Martin translates very well on air and that’s something our remote members appreciate.”

“The support system Martin has developed for its customers has solidified my appreciation for its lights. I’m a Martin fan through and through,” continued Fuller. “Every type of fixture in the industry eventually will require service and Martin is on top of it immediately. We are never down and can always rely on Martin no matter what our worship services, in any part of the world need.”

HARMAN’s Martin MAC Viper Profile Series Lights Up Les Francofolies Music Festival

AARHUS, Denmark — The annual Les Francofolies summer music festival, held in Spa, Belgium, promotes francophone music and attracts hundreds of thousands of fans over a five-day span. ARTO, a Brussels-based production company, handled the festival’s production and lighting design, which consisted exclusively of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures. As an integral part of the system ARTO deployed 28 Martin MAC Viper Profile moving head fixtures, in addition to several other Martin luminaires.

The MAC Viper Profile is a high-output profile luminaire that boasts superior light quality, an exceptional feature set and a highly optical system. With its 1000-watt HID source, the Viper consumes less power, making it over 50% more efficient than its 1200-watt rivals. Not only is the Viper Profile brighter, but it is also a faster and more compact solution. Housed in a slender and agile body, the Viper’s responsiveness and fast pan/tilt speeds have led it to become a favorite among designers.

“I chose to work with the MAC Viper Profiles for many reasons,” stated Lighting Designer Gilles Mathieu. “The colors are very nice. The red especially is a real primary red. The speed and range of the zoom is excellent and it only draws five amps of power. Logistically speaking the Vipers were really simple to hang and we were also able to place them on the floor when necessary.”

In addition, the main stage design also included 26 MAC 2000 XB Wash lights, 24 MAC Aura LED moving heads, and 8 Atomic 3000 strobe light fixtures. The MAC 2000 Wash lights offered a combination of power and color mixing, that Mathieu discussed, would not have been possible with other fixtures. The multi-function and zoom capabilities of the MAC Auras, paired with the robust color and unique power savings, were a huge asset to the live show especially during the daylight.
