HARMAN’s Martin Professional M6 Lighting Console is the Optimal Solution for Tiens Conference

NEW YORK, New York — For Tiens Company’s annual distributor conference at Moscow’s Russia Hall in SC “luzhniki”, featuring a combination of official speeches and an original concert program for 8,000 guests, HARMAN’s Martin Professional provided Lighting Designer Roman Kasaev with a M6 console to control a design with over 100 Martin lighting fixtures.

To ensure the lighting design integrated seamlessly with the conference’s theme, Kasaev teamed with Daniel Maneshin, Technical Director at the Knyazev Agency, who was brought in to design the conference’s main concept. Maneshin also developed the conference’s business section as well as conceptualized many decorative and informative elements, which featured several LED screens mounted on the main stage. Kasaev chose 48 MAC 101 compact LED wash lights due to the brightness and colors that complimented the LED screens used at the event. The MAC 101s were mounted on custom-made metal structures between screen modules, eight pieces per aperture, due to their bright colored lights that fit ideally with the colors of the video-content on LED screens.

“The MAC 101s are extremely bright and they were never lost on the background of the LED screens,” said Kasaev. “What’s more, there were moments when they outshined the powerful MAC III Profiles.”

“Thanks to the built-in effects engine of the M6, I was able to create a very sophisticated and beautiful color and dimming effects for the MAC 101s,” Kasaev explained. “It resulted in a very intense, bright and impressive picture! The MAC 101s are very fast, so I could bring more diversity into lighting design to make it more dynamic and filled with drive and energy.”

The event program also featured classical ballet and acrobatic performances. To highlight the actors and gymnasts, Kasaev also chose 34 MAC III Profiles to create unique lighting accents with beautiful rays and gobo projections.

For Kasaev, the Tiens Conference was the first project where he was able to work with M6 console, only a slight change as he is familiar with the philosophy from using the M1 and M2GO controllers before. “I had a very big set of equipment for this project so I needed a more powerful console than the M,” Kasaev said. “I reached out to the Representative Office of Martin Professional in Moscow for the support and they provided me with M6 console.”

“Working with the M6 console was very cool and awesome,” he continued. “It’s definitely number one in the M-series due to the features, functions, power and possibilities. The effects engine that Martin’s R&D invented and implemented is a crazy story! The programming speed is really impressive! I had two monitors that allowed me to program many things much faster. The whole process is a pleasure, when you work on M6! The implementation is excellent, very easy to use. Every LD could find all the instruments they need to put their creative ideas into life! I want to recommended LDs to try to work with M-series consoles. It is really very easy, logical and simple solution for programming a variety of lighting effects!”

In addition, Kasaev deployed 50 MAC Aura’s and 12 Atomic 3000 DMX strobes throughout the lighting design.

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Lighting is a Fixture in Over 400 Annual Performances at London’s Royal Opera House

LONDON, United Kingdom — The Royal Opera House (ROH) in London’s Covent Garden is home to The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. As one of the world’s most prestigious venues it features more than 400 performances each season, many of which are new productions. To ensure success throughout such a demanding schedule, the venue’s production team turned to HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures to help fill out its 1,000 light rig.

The Royal Opera House’s relationship with Martin began in 2004 when it added 10 MAC 2000 Performance luminaires to its production rig and then additional fixtures in 2011 after great success with the Performances. Recently, the ROH upgraded the venue’s rig with another 20 of Martin’s MAC Viper Performance moving head lights.

As Lighting Systems Manager at the Royal Opera House for the past 14 years, Paul Hornsby looks after the infrastructure of the building for performance lighting, including the maintenance, testing, and upgrading of the venue’s lighting systems. “We run a continual refit program – a lot of the moving lights we have are 13 or 14 years old now, so we’re gradually replacing them,” he said. “The latest upgrade was made in summer 2013 when we brought in Martin’s MAC Viper Performance moving lights to replace our MAC 2000 Performance fixtures. The Vipers are significantly faster, brighter, and more energy efficient than their predecessor.”

The Royal Opera House has three main spaces – the main stage and the purpose-built Linbury Studio Theatre and Clore Studio – all of which are in continual use. “Most of our work happens on the main stage which has a new show every ten days,” said Hornsby. “We have a main rig and additional show lighting bars which can be used when required. We love working with Martin Professional lights because they’re durable fixtures that are easy to use and maintain.”

As a general rule, visiting productions are encouraged to use the house rig. “Our house equipment fulfills what most lighting designers need,” said Hornsby. “We try not to rent gear because a show here could live for up to 40 years. For example, ‘Don Giovanni’ is a new production that could come back bi-annually for the next ten years and the lighting design would remain the same during that time. If we had to rent equipment each time, that would be a substantial overhead.”

In addition to the 20 MAC Vipers, which Hornsby says reduces rigging and change over time, the venue has placed several MAC Aura LED wash lights at front of house. Hornsby chose the Aura’s due to limited space in the Royal Opera House’s auditorium where he needed a light that would not obstruct the audience’s view. “When we discovered the MAC Aura it was absolutely fantastic,” he said. “Nobody notices the fixtures are there because they are so discreet and quiet, but are still capable of producing the quality light we needed out front.”

Low noise and reliability are essential in every new light Hornsby specifies for the Royal Opera House. “The entire Martin range is quiet,” he said. “Although we have spares for every fixture in the rig, we rarely have a problem. Since August 2013 we’ve had just one light come down for a slight, easily fixed, issue. With a rig that must work 15 hours a day, seven days a week, that really does speak for itself.”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Introduces Soft Lens Accessory for the MAC Quantum Wash To Enhance Theatrical Productions

AARHUS, Denmark — HARMAN’s Martin Professional today introduced the Soft Lens accessory for the MAC Quantum Wash light. This optional accessory is designed to enhance the capabilities of the MAC Quantum Wash and optimize the fixture for theatrical applications.

The Soft Lens accessory allows the MAC Quantum wash to create a more compact and dense beam. By utilizing the Soft Lens accessory, the synthetic LED look of the lens is reduced for a more Fresnel-style appearance of the front lens.

“With the Soft Lens accessory, the MAC Quantum Wash is the most effective LED wash light available for professional theatrical applications,” commented Markus Klüsener, Product Manager for Stage Lighting, Martin Professional. “The lens creates a more even color wash that enhances the audience experience at any theatre production.”

The lens also eliminates potential light artifacts that can appear on nearby surfaces at a 90-degree angle from the fixture’s aperture. Comprised of a ring and diffuser foil, the lens is a compact unit that can be easily mounted on the MAC Quantum Wash and can remain mounted on the fixture during transport in the original flight case.

The Soft Lens is available for preorder on Martin’s eShop, my.martin.com and will begin shipping in June 2014.

The Pixies Tour the World with HARMAN’s Martin Professional Lighting

BOSTON, Massachusetts — Legendary alternative rock band The Pixies have made quite the comeback after their revival 10 years ago, and are now on a worldwide tour with a full lighting rig from HARMAN’s Martin Professional.

Full service lighting, sound and rigging rental company based in New York, See Factor, worked with Myles Mangino, Lighting Designer for The Pixies, to create a rig featuring 15 MAC Viper Profiles, 12 MAC Auras, four RUSH MH3s and three Jem K1 Hazers.

The Pixies, who recently stopped at the renowned Coachella Music Festival after their reunion tour began nearly 10 years ago, needed a versatile lighting solution designed for different venues, stages and festivals.

“The real challenge was to have a show that could be as closely as possible duplicated in markets across the world,” stated Mangino. “Having a kit that was small enough to fit in a container, and also using fixtures that could be sourced in different markets was paramount.”

The upstage truss has 8-foot tail down bars for the MAC Vipers that went over the back screen. “The second we saw the Viper fixture we were impressed with its capabilities,” said Alban Sardzinski, See Factor. “It’s a compact light with a large zoom and high output which really helps Myles due to the fact that he can position it super close while still be effective. The first time we tried it at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and we only had a few feet behind his screen but it worked perfectly!”

“The Viper is currently my favorite fixture,” said Mangino. “The optics are wonderful and the speed of the zoom is unmatched. For a show like the Pixies, I run everything live, off temp faders. There are no cues or chases running so the responsiveness is critical for me. The Martin fixtures pan, tilt and the wheels seem to respond to manual movements with faders better than anything else I’ve tried.”

At first, Mangino was skeptical of the RUSH MH3s, but after just one show they were part of the rig. “I love the colors! They all match and we more or less use them as the bands key light by reflecting them off the mirrored domes above the stage.”

“The Auras, in my opinion, are the most essential element,” mentioned Sardzinski. “I knew Mangino had used them prior to the Pixies and they would fit in perfectly with the rest of the rig. I love the look of the beam and the colors they create. They are perfect for the backlight effect we were going for.”

“When the tour first launched we weren’t using Martin hazers,” Sardzinksi continued, “but they were so loud and obnoxious that we swapped them out for the K1s and we couldn’t be happier.”

“We’re proud to work with Mangino and with Martin,” said Sardzinski. “We’ve always found Martin to have very durable fixtures and whenever we have them out there we know we’ll have a perfect show, every time!”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional MAC Quantum Wash™ LED Fixture Makes World Debut at Russia’s Arena Moscow Club

MOSCOW, Russia — Russia’s Arena Moscow Club recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Russian Internet—and the first registered domain name—with an extravagant concert event featuring an array of famous musical groups and musicians, such as Lyapis Troubetzkoy, Vasya Oblomov, Smyslovye Galljucinacii, Bravo, and Samsara. The event also marked the first official live performance of HARMAN Martin Professional’s MAC Quantum Wash LED fixtures in the world. Russian rental company Laser-Kinetics provided the lighting system.

The lighting design featured 37 MAC Quantum Wash lights that were placed on the web of trusses to provide the main wash effect with wide, powerful and bright beams, and to create decorative effects throughout the show. Twelve of Martin’s MAC Viper Profiles were also hung on the background and worked in tandem with 20 Martin MAC 700 fixtures that were placed on the top trusses to add flashes of energy to the concert and create bright mid-air effects. Additionally, the lighting designer installed 12 MAC 301 Wash lights on the side trusses above the dance floor for backlight and deployed 16 Atomic 3000 DMX strobe lights.

The Moscow Arena has a quiet ascetic design with no screens, scenery or any construction. Specialists from Laser-Kinetics, together with Lighting Designer Alexander Bel’kov and the production company, Art Koleso, decided to make lighting design the focus for this event. The creative design concept was based on the traditional Internet symbol – the web. Highlighted truss structures were placed in the corresponding geometrical order and a set of Martin lighting fixtures created an additional bright entourage with the new LED moving heads of the MAC Quantum Wash.

“We were in an extreme need of a powerful LED wash fixture,” said Alex Leonov, CTO Laser-Kinetics. “At the same time, we didn’t want to invest in another brand’s equipment. We are very loyal to Martin products as they proved to be reliable and efficient in rental business.”

The MAC Quantum Wash features tight beams, beautiful wash fields, a market-leading color palette, and uniform mixing that combines to accommodate the most demanding applications offering brightness and perfection. By combining an impressive 750-watts of RGBW LED power with Martin’s market leading optical system, the MAC Quantum Wash’s 1:6 zoom is guaranteed to operate with maximum output and ensure superior performance.

“MAC Quantum Wash fully meets our expectations,” stated Leonov. “We have received a powerful LED wash light, the one that we expected. Martin even added an ability to create decorative effects, and in fact, now we have a ‘2-in-1’ fixture. Evidently, it’s a time for a new generation of moving heads and MAC Quantum is a bright representative of this generation.”

“We just used the fixtures for the first time, so we don’t know all their features yet but we are going to experiment! The first impression is definitely positive! Now we can say that the MAC Quantum Wash has a brilliant color palette and ability to create beautiful effects due to the rotation of the lens.”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Lights Up the Stage for the Arnold Sports Festival 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Having worked with the Arnold Sports Festival as its exclusive provider of lighting and staging systems for over 20 years, Live! Technologies, LLC. recently took the show to a new level with an array of lighting elements from HARMAN’s Martin Professional.

The Live! Technologies team, including Michael Farrell, Business Development and Marketing Executive, and Michael Hesmond, Lighting Programmer, deployed a rig of over 100 Martin lights including 12 Viper Performances, 12 Viper Profiles, six MAC III Performances, 36 MAC Auras, 22 MAC 101s, 12 RUSH MH3 Beams, four Atomic 3000 DMX strobes, 60 EC-10 video panels and one P3-200 Video Processor/Scaler.

The Arnold Sports Festival 2014 took place in Columbus, Ohio in early March, and featured over 800 exhibitors showcasing the latest sports equipment, apparel and nutritional products. The main stage was the center for non-stop entertainment and competitions, featuring premier body building athletes including Zydrunas Savicakas, Dimitar, Michael Burke and of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Everything worked out extremely well,” Farrell mentioned. “We started months in advance with the set design and did roughly 100 hours of pre-programming for the show. Other than that, the setup took two days and it was straightforward.”

For both Farrell and Hesmond, it was their first time using the P3-200 Controller, RUSH MH3 Beam lights and Viper Performances. “We used all the moving lights for our stage wash and video lighting, all the Auras for backlight and used the Viper fixtures for the front stage lighting,” Farrell stated. “The Viper is a great fixture to use. It’s nice and bright and has a great color temperature.”

“The video aspect was somewhat new to us, but the lighting system was very easy to use, which gave us great confidence that it would perform as we envisioned,” Farrell added. “The RUSH MH3 Beams are really awesome, they are super bright and punch right through everything. We were really impressed! The Vipers have great color temperature as well. We didn’t have to do much correction with the LED’s to get it perfect, it was a nice surprise!”

“The ultimate measure was seeing the audience’s response when the athletes came out and hit the stage,” Farrell explained. “They were rock stars up there with a bunch of raving fans screaming. The lighting rig really sold the power of these athletes and made it worth every dollar the audience paid for tickets. It will be tough to outdo ourselves next year!”

In addition to Martin, Live! Technologies deployed HARMAN’s JBL Professional VRX and PRX loudspeakers along with Crown’s amplifiers. “We appreciate working with Martin and all the HARMAN brands and look forward to next years show being brighter and even more successful than this years,” Farrell summed up. “This rig is so awesome it should be used for everything!”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Exterior 400 Image Projectors Create A Unique Fireworks Simulation at Russia’s Belgorod Airport

BELGOROD, Russia — As part of a Russian program devoted to the modernization of transportation infrastructure, the newly built Belgorod Airport was constructed to be one of the most attractive and convenient hubs in Russia’s Central Black Earth Region. In addition to the airport’s focus on innovative architecture, high-quality finish materials and optimized infrastructure, Moscow-based STK Heliocity was brought in to develop a unique combination of architectural and artistic lighting for multiple scenarios: everyday usage, night time usage, and holidays/special occasions. In order to implement lighting designs for holidays and other celebrations at the airport, Heliocity installed 16 of HARMAN’s Martin Professional Exterior 400 Image Projectors.

Heliocity’s design features traditional symbols, multiple color transitions—in the style of the Belgorod region’s coat of arms (azure to green and gold)—and a special fireworks element. As a tribute to the region’s unique and proud military history, the fireworks are a complex design element that feature dynamic flashes and simulated flying sparks from an explosion of color to create the effect of fireworks on the arches above the airport’s main entrance.

To complete their design, the team at Heliocity needed to deploy a reliable weatherproof fixture that could create bright light projections yet be extremely energy-efficient. The company turned to Martin’s Exterior 400 IP in order to meet these detailed requirements.

“After analyzing several fixtures we decided on Martin Professional’s Exterior 400 IP due to its durability and convenient programming capabilities,” commented Anton Karpun, Project Designer, STK Heliocity. “To create the fireworks scene we ordered a special set of gobos for firework imitation. The gobos paired with the Exterior 400’s extremely robust light allowed us to successfully create a beautiful scenography of dynamic color that can be easily activated with a single button.”

Martin Professional’s Exterior 400 Image Projector is a powerful tool for integrating textures, patterns, and graphics in outdoor lighting designs and is capable of producing over 7000 lumens of extremely bright light projections. The fixture also features advanced LED technology for unparalleled energy-efficiency, a rugged IP65 housing, and up to six customizable gobos, eight customizable colors and a range of pre-programmable effects, from continuous image rotation to focus and dimming.

“We needed to develop a simple scheme for the user that would only be utilized on holidays and special occasions such as VIP guests or international delegation arrivals,” explained Karpun. “Our design would not have been successful without the help of Martin’s Exterior 400 Image Projector. The custom capabilities and LED technology of the fixture have made this project a true success!”

The program was held before the final stage of the Torch Relay. Lighting designer, Alexey Yevstifeyev, who deployed Martin fixtures based on their functionality and brightness, proposed the lighting concept of the show to feature creative lighting and midair effects, consisting of 20 MAC Viper Profiles, 12 Atomic 3000 DMX, 20 RUSH MH3 Beams, 48 MAC 101s and 20 MAC 2000 Wash XB’s.

The ice show took place at the Yubileny Sport Palace’s hockey rink with the main challenge being the limited time for installation. Taking this factor into consideration, Yevstifeyev used a combined truss mounting and floor mounting system.

By placing the MAC 101 fixtures on the floor around the rink, he was able to create a beautiful display with compact and extremely fast LED wash lights, emphasizing the artist’s movements through the reflection effects.

According to Yevstifeyev, ice shows are unique in that the ice surface, together with light projections, becomes an individual element of performance design. Yevstifeyev chose to deploy the MAC Viper to get the maximum out of the space he was given.

“I’ve been acquainted with Martin’s MAC Viper for a very long time already,” Yevstifeyev explained. “They have a brilliant reputation for functionality and light intensity. They have already become a workhorse in the industry. That’s why lighting designers constantly choose them for their projects. Besides, MAC Viper has a very good collection of creative and beautiful gobos. Using them, one can create really interesting pictures. They were really useful for me on this project!”

Additionally, the RUSH MH 3 Beam added a great dynamic to the show and put the accents into the figure skaters’ performance with different styles and themes.

“Although the MH3 Beam belongs to the entry-level line, it is very effective,” said Yevstifeyev. “It proves to be very strong when compared to alternative fixtures when you need to create bright beam effects in midair, so it is no surprise we at Euroshow use these fixtures quite regularly.”
